More than 250 players, supporters, and sponsors of the Burleigh Bears Rugby League Club gathered on Saturday for a fantastic lunch at the Gold Coast Races, enjoying great company, racing action, and a special guest appearance from one of their own.

The Burleigh Bears have a proud history on the Gold Coast, dating all the way back to 1924, making them one of the region’s oldest rugby league clubs.

The highlight of the afternoon was a guest speaking session featuring trainer Adam Campton, who was interviewed by well-known real estate identity Dennis McDermott, Managing Director of McDermott Residential. The pair shared plenty of entertaining discussion, including Adam’s thoughts on the day’s racing.

Of course, no racing lunch would be complete without a tip or two, and when asked for his best bet of the day, Adam didn’t hesitate. He nominated his own stable runner, Count Nicholas, lining up in Race 7 over 1200 metres.

What happened next was the kind of result every punter dreams about.

Count Nicolas didn’t just salute the judge — he put on a show, charging home to win by five lengths and returning a tidy $3.10 for supporters who took Adam’s advice.

It’s fair to say there were more than a few smiling Burleigh Bears fans after the race. Those who backed Adam’s “best bet” were rewarded with a winning ticket and a great story to take home from an already awesome afternoon.

For the Burleigh Bears community, it was another successful gathering combining two Queensland favourites — rugby league and racing — with a winning result to top it all off.
